About the Department

History

Established in 1946, the Texas A&M University Department of Construction Science has led the way in excellence of construction higher education. Both graduate and undergraduate programs were among the first in the nation to be accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). With approximately 1,100 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, Texas A&M University Department of Construction Science continues to lead the way as one of finest programs of construction higher education in the nation.

Program

Our programs integrate principles of architecture, technology, engineering, business and project management, preparing students to effectively manage the total construction process. Specialized course work is taught in a variety of areas, including:

  • building systems
  • materials and methods of construction
  • scheduling
  • cost estimating
  • structures
  • construction management, law
  • business/labor relations

This interdisciplinary approach provides the student with the best possible exposure to the various tools needed to become a construction industry leader.

Our program prepares our graduates to enter the construction industry in various positions with the ability to lead, problem solve and use innovative applications on their projects. Industry feedback has consistently indicated that our graduates are well prepared to face today's construction industry challenges. While many of our graduates follow a traditional path of advancement rising to the top leadership of construction companies across the state, the country, and the world, many others build on the firm foundations of their degree to develop diverse careers.

Faculty

The department’s faculty is comprised of approximately 33 full and part time faculty members. Our faculty boasts a diversity of experience firmly rooted in the construction industry, including industry career experience, industry research, and academic background.

The faculty culture and openness work to create a close bond between students and teachers which is strengthened by faculty involvement in extra-curricular student activities such as advising student professional organizations and coaching student competition teams.

Mission

The Construction Science Department is dedicated to education, discovery, development and application of knowledge in the field of construction while fulfilling the land grant mission of Texas A&M University and enhancing the economic development of the State of Texas. Our mission of providing the highest quality academic programs is inseparable from our mission of developing new understanding through teaching, research and service. We prepare students to assume roles in leadership, responsibility and service to society.
